The Higher English course provides you with the opportunity to develop skills in reading, writing, talking and listening. You will learn to understand, analyse, evaluate and use complex language for a range of purposes in practical contexts. The course enables candidates to communicate, to think critically, and to be thoughtful and creative.

Language and literature are key aspects of our culture, and the cultures of others, and through them can be fostered an awareness, and a celebration of cultural diversity.

Success in National 5 English provides accreditation of Core Skills Communication SCQF level 5 and an access route to Higher English. The course consists of 24 SCQF credit points which includes time for preparation for course assessment. The notional length of time for candidates to complete the course is 160 hours.

Unit 1: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation

This unit introduces you to complex written language and provides practice in understanding, analysing and evaluating complex writing.  You will study a range of written material taken from non-fiction and literary sources. This unit provides you with an opportunity to develop the language skills required for success in Paper 1 of the final exam: Reading for Understanding, Analysis and Evaluation.

It also helps you to develop your own writing skills in both fiction and non-fiction writing. You are required to submit a Portfolio of Writing for external assessment prior to sitting the final exam, so this unit will help you to produce effective writing for this element of assessment.

Unit 2: Written and Spoken Language

This unit is about enabling you to put into practice what you have learned in Unit 1. You will learn how to plan, organise and deliver complex written and spoken language to effectively communicate meaning. You will also learn how to structure and present this information to meet the needs of purpose and audience.

Unit 2 helps you to develop the skills necessary to succeed in both the internal Spoken Language assessment and the external Portfolio of Writing assessment.

Unit 3: Critical Reading

Unit 3 focuses on the specific texts you will use in Paper 2 of the exam and provides you with an opportunity to practise your responses for this paper.

You should complete all three units by early March to allow time to revise and prepare for the final prelim and exam. The prelim will be marked by your tutor who will highlight any areas of weakness and help you devise a revision plan to improve your performance in the final exam.
